Mr. Basil W. Waters Jr., 93, of Derwood, died Sunday, Jan. 7, at Friends Nursing Home, Sandy Spring.

He was the husband of Mary Irene Magruder Waters, who died in 1983. They had been married 50 years.

Born Dec. 30, 1907, in Brookeville, he was a son of the late Basil W. Sr. and Julia Bradley Waters.

He was raised on his father’s family farm in Olney and attended Brookeville Academy and Sherwood School until the 10th grade. He moved to his mother’s family farm in Redland and graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1926. After graduation he attended Strayer College in Washington.

He also worked in Washington at an A&P grocery store. He began to raise chickens as the beginning of his farm career. He married in 1933 and continued to farm, raising hogs, crops and cattle until he sold his farm in 1958. After that he did custom hauling.

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Olney, where his grandparents gave the property for the church. After moving to Redland, he became a member of the Church of the Ascension, Gaithersburg.

He is survived by two children, Laura Ann Whirley of Derwood, and Basil W. Waters III of Gaithersburg; two grandsons, Bobby F. Whirley Jr. and Timothy F. Whirley, both of Derwood; daughter-in-law, Betty Waters; and son-in-law, Bobby Whirley Sr.
